If the plot was developed better, I would not have found the story so confusing. I was left with too many unanswered questions at the end of the novel. Normally when you get to the climax of the story, all the pieces start falling into place. I debated between giving The Breathless by Tara Goedjen 2 or 3 out of 5 stars because I loved the ideas for the story, but unfortunately, it read like a rough draft. “Lance and Cage were the last two people to see her they had to know more than they claimed.” But first Mea must unlock secrets of her family’s past. With the discovery of a family heirloom by her younger sister, Mae, and the mysterious return of Cage, there may be a way to bring Ro back to life. Now that I have finished the whole book, I will try my best to write a short synopsis: A year ago Ro Cole drowned, and the only suspect, her boyfriend Cage, disappeared. Even though the synopsis on the back of the book sounds interesting, the story was poorly constructed making it hard to explain the book to others. When he asked me about The Breathless by Tara Goedjen, I was really at a loss for words, and he looked at me like I a crazy person as I tried to summarize the plot to him. One of the student-staff tutors I work with always asks me about the books I read. In two years she’ll be dead, but she doesn’t know that.”

Confused, but unafraid - lacking any natural predators, it knows no fear - it oozes its way into the coastal wetlands of Wharton's Swamp and gorges itself on muskrats and other small animals, until the sunrise brings, for the first time, pain unused as it is to light, the slime finds that the sunlight burns its flesh, forcing it to bury itself in the muck of a murky pool in order to escape. One night, during a nighttime storm off the coast of the town of Clinton Center, an undersea upheaval propels the slime up to the surface, where a tidal wave created by the storm washes it ashore. It eats everything from small fish and crustaceans to even other large predators such as sharks and giant squid. It is capable of forming tentacles to grab prey, although its favorite method is to form itself into a vague hood or umbrella shape (one of author Brennan's favorite descriptions for it is "the hood of horror"). A deep sea creature that is effectively immortal, having existed since the time of the dinosaurs, the slime is inky black in color, and prowls along the ocean floor, propelled solely by a desire to feed and add to its bulk. The Slime is the main antagonist of John Payne Brennan's 1953 short story of the same name. In a 1964 article, educator and historian Henry Littlefield outlined an allegory in the book of the late-19th-century debate regarding monetary policy. For the 1902 Broadway production Baum inserted explicit references to prominent political characters such as President Theodore Roosevelt. Biographers report that Baum had been a political activist in the 1890s with a special interest in the money question of gold and silver ( bimetallism), and the illustrator William Wallace Denslow was a full-time editorial cartoonist for a major daily newspaper. The political interpretations focus on the first three, and emphasize the close relationship between the visual images and the story line to the political interests of the day. Fantasy and sci-fi is a world rich in different genres, but as soon as I read how she described what the term meant to her, I realised she had important things to contribute to our ongoing discussion about imagination, in particular to the question of how our storytelling can help to bring to life in the here and now the kind of future we want to create. The quote captures the essence of an idea, a genre, which she coined, called ‘ hopepunk’. These are the words of fantasy author Alexandra Rowland, whose novel ‘A Conspiracy of Truths’ was published late last year. “It’s about how the first step to slaying a dragon is for one person to say, probably drunk in a bar somewhere, “I bet it can be done, though”.
